No team should ever trade a talent like Mike Hoffman.
On the other hand, Eugene Melnyk is almost as stubborn as Bob Nutting when it comes to opening up his wallet. The Senators are one of the worst teams in the league this season, and Melnyk just gave Hoffman a four-year deal worth $5.187M per year. It’s not out of the question that he would be open to dealing Hoffman, especially with Erik Karlsson due for a big raise after next season. It should cost a lot to pry Hoffman from Ottawa, probably more than the Penguins have to offer, but NHL GMs are some of the most unpredictable beasts in the world, and they’re always prone to a bad deal.
